SPANS Visits Pertama Ferroalloys: Strengthening Collaboration for Sarawak’s Development

27 November 2024, Samalaju, Bintulu – Pertama Ferroalloys hosted a study visit by the Sarawak Public Service Commission (SPANS) led by Mdm. Nuraya binti Abdullah. The visit aimed to explore Pertama’s corporate strategies and contributions to Sarawak’s socio-economic growth.

Welcoming the delegation, Mdm. Porida Sumin, Head of Human Resources, emphasized that Pertama measures success not only by financial achievements but also through social responsibility and community well-being. She credited the company’s progress to the leadership of General Manager Mr. Yuki Nakamura, whose inclusive and visionary approach has fostered a culture of innovation and social engagement. “He is unlike any other general manager, as he possesses a unique combination of wisdom, vision, integrity, innovation, and a great sense of purpose,” said Porida.

The Pertama team presented key initiatives, including a structured onboarding program, on-the-job rotation for professional growth, and a collaboration with the Akademi Dalam Industri (ADI) that offers diploma courses to employees without tertiary qualifications. Pertama also promotes flexible working hours and enhanced benefits for the female staff at Pertama for the workers’ convenience.

As of late, Pertama had hosted several ministerial visit, including the visit of the Minister of Education and Talent Development while serving as a bridge between the Sarawak State Ministry and the local schools in Bintulu, primarily in Samalaju. Mdm. Gelburai Rabung, Senior Executive of Business Development, highlighted Pertama’s sustainability efforts, particularly in reducing carbon emissions.

The SPANS delegation expressed keen interest in Pertama’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, particularly impressed by the company’s broad spectrum of community-focused programs. They noted that Pertama’s efforts align with SPANS’ mission to enhance public service through effective community engagement.

The visit concluded with a plant tour, giving SPANS insights into Pertama’s operations. The delegation appreciated the informative presentations and noted valuable takeaways, including Pertama’s innovative HR practices. They also shared their scholarship program, which offers 75% scholarships and 25% loans to deserving students, reinforcing their commitment to education.

Both parties expressed gratitude and optimism for continued collaboration, highlighting their shared dedication to Sarawak’s sustainable development.
