Sarawak State School Sports Council Handball Tournament 2024 Concludes with Success
Betong, Sarawak – The Sarawak State School Sports Council Handball Tournament 2024, held at the Riveria Sport Centre in Debak, Betong, has come to a successful conclusion. Organized by the Sarawak State Education Department, Sarawak State Sports Council, and the Betong District Education Office, the event showcased the talents of young handball players from across the state.
The annual tournament, which rotates among different hosts based on the school calendar in Malaysia, was previously hosted by the Miri Education Office in 2023. This year in Betong, the competition featured four categories: under 12 boys, under 12 girls, under 18 boys, and under 18 girls.
A total of 12 contingents participated in the under 12 categories, while 9 contingents competed in the under 18 categories, highlighting the depth of handball talent in Sarawak. The tournament spanned five days, from the 5th to the 9th of August, culminating in a prize-giving ceremony officiated by Datuk Razi Sitam, Deputy Ministry of Welfare (KKWPK) and Saribas Assemblyman.
The results of the tournament saw Miri dominating the under 12 and under 18 boys’ categories, while Bintulu emerged victorious in the under 18 girls’ category. Miri’s success in the under 12 girls’ category underscored the city’s strong handball sport.
Pertama Ferroalloys contributed to the success of the tournament by supporting one of its employees from the Public Affairs and CSR department, Mr. Sylvester Sumping, to serve as a referee. Sylvester was on official duty from the first match to the finals, performing roles as both a court referee and a technical delegate.
His involvement in handball extends beyond his role as a referee in the said tournament. Since 2018, he has been serving as a handball coach for the Sarawak Sports Corporation, contributing to the development and training of handball players in the state. Additionally, since 2019, he has took the role as a handball referee in Bintulu tournaments since 2019, demonstrating his deep commitment and expertise in the sport of handball within Sarawak.
The tournament not only provided a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills but also promoted sportsmanship and teamwork among students. The involvement of Pertama Ferroalloys reflects the company’s commitment to community engagement and the development of sports in Sarawak.
